How to find the best car GPS?

car gps driving

To find the best car GPS, you must first define what you need and expect from the GPS.

There are many options available in car GPS units and manufacturers are adding additional options with each new model that is released.

Currently, here are some of the available options to consider:

·        Text to speech (speaks street names)
·        Wide screen
·        Lane assist
·        Land assist with junction view
·        Bluetooth® wireless
·        MP3 player
·        Photo viewer
·        FM lifetime traffic
·        Preloaded map options
·        MSN® Direct

and the list goes on and on.

First, define what options you need. The most important one is “text to speech”. I highly recommend that you pay the additional amount to purchase a GPS that speaks street names. If the GPS tells you “turn right in 400 feet” but does not tell you the street name on which to turn, and there are two possible turns close together, you will have to look on the display for your street name. Taking your eyes off the road for only a few seconds is very dangerous. Don’t take the chance of rear ending the car in front of you or hitting someone.

Consider the other options. If you live in a metro area where you have to contend with daily traffic problems, then consider the FM lifetime traffic option. If you want to use the GPS with other Bluetooth® capable devices, then consider that option.

Once you have defined your selection criteria, you are ready to start your search for the best car GPS that will satisfy your requirements.

The best place to search for your best car GPS is on Amazon. Most people think of Amazon as a store. It is that, but it also has very powerful search and sort functions that let you find the best car GPS with only a few clicks.

On Amazon, GPS units are listed in the Electronics Department so begin by selecting “Electronics” in the left drop down search box. Then enter “gps” in the right search input box and click the orange “Go” button to the right of the search boxes.

When the page loads, you will see a rectangle across the top of the search results. Look in the rectangle for “See Most Popular in:” with a list of GPS types listed across the page. Click the “Vehicle” link in this list.

This will display all vehicle GPS sorted in bestselling order. The search results will fill several pages so you can browse through these search results pages to find the best car GPS that meets your requirements in your price range.

Guide and explanation of GPS receivers

Recently at the market there are four major types of GPS receivers - the Standalone GPS receivers, Bluetooth GPS receivers, CompactFlash GPS expansion cards and Combo devices. In this article we give you one very quick to read but good for novice or future becoming GPS users guide.

Standalone GPS receiver

Standalone GPS receivers come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different budgets from the basic monochrome screen ones to full-colour handheld and car navigation systems. There are quite a number of manufacturers in the market, but the more well-known ones are Magellan and Garmin, and they produce a bewildering array of standalone receivers, even down to wristwatch-sized ones specifically meant to monitor activities like jogging and cycling. Some issues to consider when buying a standalone GPS receiver is how much built-in memory it has - normally 1MB to 4MB of internal memory is not a good idea if you’re planning to load a lot of maps into the receiver as most maps tend to take up about 2MB to 5MB. High-end models also feature barometric pressure sensors and even digital compasses to augment the information provided by the GPS unit. Most standalone GPS units are also built to be very tough and water resistant which makes them ideal for hiking and water activities like sailing. more…

How to buy GPS for your car?

car gps unitBuying in-car GPS is not the easiest task, because you can’t take it for a test drive. GPS units are well-packed and it’s difficult to know how they’ll perform in real-world conditions. So we offer you our 4 basic tips on how to select and buy an GPS car unit for your needs at the best price:

1. Wath do you need and which features will you use?

Your first step is to understand what features are available; what you need based on anticipated use; what would be nice to have if you are willing to spend a little more, and what’s a good value.

2. Read reviews of the proposed devices

Find latest articles about top models by category. Compare the characteristics of products and review the feedback from users.

3. Learn море about features of the product such as Traffic Detection/Avoidance and Hands-free Calling

Any in-car GPS unit can do more than give you turn-by-turn directions. Most higher-end units can help you detect and avoid traffic backups and can be used, along with a connection to your mobile phone, as a hands-free calling device.

4. Get the most from your Car GPS (and drive safely)

Once you’ve purchased your car GPS, there are some simple setup steps you can take to get the most from your navigator. Read the user guide for your GSP unit, to learn important safety and maintenance information.

When you walk into a big electronics store, you can often try out the item you’re thinking of buying, whether it’s watching a big screen television, checking out a laptop’s display, or listening to a stereo. Buying in-car GPS can be a bit more challenging, because you can’t take it for a test drive. GPS units are often sealed in packages, and even if they’re on display, it’s difficult to know how they’ll perform in real-world conditions.

GPS Tracking - is it loss of personal freedom?

GPS technology has been around for a while now, and we are seeing the GPS devices getting smaller and smaller each year. Mention GPS to some, and they instantly think of electronic mapping, and in car units such as TomTom and Garmin.

But there is much more to GPS technology as you are about to find out. GPS tracking allows the monitoring of a person, or object, and can be done from anywhere in the world, even from the comfort of your own home.

By using satellites maintained by the government, the unit is able to pinpoint the exact location of a car, a child or even a pet and relay the information back to mapping software on a computer or via the GPRS network to a mobile phone.

Hand held radios, such as the Motorola Mototrbo digital radio contain built in GPS tracking devices which easily allow the tracking of the unit and the employee using it.

As you may have read, there are three types of GPS tracking devices. Data loggers, data pushers and data pullers.

Data Loggers

Data loggers, believe it or not, keep a log of the position of the tracker using the devices internal memory. These are very popular in the outdoor sporting industry such as hiking and mountaineering. Enthusiasts can plug their device into their computer when they return home to overlay an online map with their journey and calculate the distance of their trip.

Data pushers

As the name suggests, data pushers send information about the position of a tracker, usually at regular intervals to a central device or server. An ideal use for this could be a courier or haulage fleet.

An ideal use for data pushers is also on the elderly or those that suffer conditions such as Alzheimer’s. The device can help monitor the movements of patients to ensure that they don’t move too far away from the home or hospitals. Another use for data pushers could be for pet tracking. How many times has your cat disappeared for days on end. With a data pusher you could keep track of the animals movements and ease those days of worry!

Data pullers

A data puller will remain with a person or on an object so that it can be queried at any time. These types of devices using mobile phone technology. Usually a message or SMS is sent to the device and it will reply with the co-ordinates of its location.
